Ireland: Take action against fox hunting ban NOW

The Animal Health and Welfare (Ban on Fox Hunting) Bill 2025, introduced in the Irish Parliament on 27 May, aims to make it illegal to hunt wild mammals—specifically foxes—using dogs anywhere in the Republic of Ireland. The bill would represent a major shift in regulation by fully prohibiting traditional forms of fox hunting, which have long been practiced in rural areas.

Fox hunting plays a huge role in managing the population of Ireland’s red foxes, which can threaten livestock such as lambs and poultry. Alternatives are limited due to the absence of natural predators capable of controlling fox numbers. The ban could therefore disrupt long-standing rural practices and community traditions.

The bill passed its First Reading under unusual circumstances and will proceed to the Second Stage, where debate and a vote will determine whether it moves forward or is rejected. Its outcome may also influence future discussions about similar legislation in Northern Ireland, potentially affecting policy alignment across the island.
